Pigmented Lesions
Pigmented lesions occur when certain cells on our skin, called melanocytes are damaged over time, it affects the amount of melanin produced. Melanin is the pigment responsible for skin colour. When the melanin our cells produce is affected, it can cause a variety of pigmentation issues, discolouration, and sometimes unsightly concerns. One commonly seen issue is pigmented lesions, or pigmented spots, which appear on the surface of the skin. This can include, but not limited to: freckles, melasma, sun spots, and even birthmarks.
How It Works:
The GentleMax Pro uses laser technology, and specifically dual wavelengths (1064 nm Nd: YAG laser), which penetrate into the epidermal skin layer and reach the cells in which the lesions are occurring. Once done these cells are heated, it absorbs the thermal energy. This allows targeted tissue cells, which is carrying the lesions, to be destroyed. The result leaves smoother, less pigmented skin and a much clearer complexion.

FAQ
Pre-Treatment
- Avoid the sun 4-6 weeks before and after treatment until your physician allows it.
- Your provider may ask you to stop any topical medications or skin care products 3-5 days prior to treatment.
- If have had a history of perioral herpes simplex virus, your provider may recommend prophylactic antiviral therapy when treating that area. Follow the directions for your particular medication.
- If you are tanned or have a darker skin type, you may not be a good candidate.
- RECENTLY TANNED SKIN CANNOT BE TREATED! If treated within 2 weeks of active (natural sunlight or tanning booth) tanning, you may develop hypopigmentation (white spots) and this may not clear for 2-3 months or more.
- The use of self tanning skin care products must be discontinued one week before treatment. Any residual self tanner must be removed prior to treatment.
During The Treatment
- If there is any product on the area, the skin will be thoroughly cleaned prior to treatment.
- When treating the upper lip, the teeth may be protected with moist white gauze. The gauze also serves to support the lip during treatment, allowing a surface to push against.
- The DCD (cryogen cooling device) is typically not used during the treatment. It may be used if the provider desires.
- Safety considerations are important during the laser procedure. Protective eyewear will be worn by the patient and all personnel in the operative suite during the procedure to reduce the chance of damage to the eye. Your provider will take necessary precautions to ensure your safety and comfort.
- Any treatment on the face will be followed by SPF application.
Post-Treatment
- Immediately after treatment, there should be erythema (redness) and edema (swelling) at the treatment site, which may last up to 2 hours, or longer. The erythema may last up to 2-3 days. The treated area will feel like a sunburn for a few hours after treatment.
- Your provider may use an optional cooling method immediately following treatment to ensure your comfort.
- A topical soothing skin care product such as aloe vera gel may be applied following treatment if desired.
- Avoid sun exposure to reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation (darker pigmentation).
- Use sunblock (SPF 30+) at all times throughout the course of treatment.
- The treated pigment will appear darker immediately and within the first few days following treatment. The darkened pigment will flake off like dry skin within 7-10 days. Avoid picking or scratching the treated skin.
- There are no restrictions on bathing except to treat the skin gently, as if you had a sunburn, for the first 24 hours.
FAQ
What if I am not 100% sure if the spots are benign?
- We do offer FREE consultations if you are unsure if this is the right treatment for you. We are generally able to gauge if the treatment will be effective for your concerns. We are not able to diagnose you with a specific condition and for this reason we do not perform this treatment without 100% confidence. If you are unsure about the spot(s), please make an appointment with your dermatologist first so that we can be fully aware of all medical history before treatment.
What areas can be treated?
- We are able to treat almost any area on the body for sun spot/pigment removal. Most common areas include the face, hands and chest.
When will I see results?
- Results differ based on each individual’s expectations + medical history factors. Clients will notice a darkening of the pigment the following 10-14 days after treatment. Once the darker pigment flakes off, we can better gauge what results will be achieved. Following post-treatment care is essential for optimal results.
How many sessions will I need?
- The number of sessions will depend on your own individual expectations as well as the amount/ severity of the pigmented lesion(s). The treatments are sold in single sessions for this reason – each treatment is based off of your own wants + needs. Typically, we see clients tend to only need 2 or 3 sessions for maximum results. For a better idea, book a FREE consultation with our laser experts.
How often do I need treatments?
- After your first treatment, we can assess your progress at the 2-week mark. If it is decided that another session is needed, it can be done 4 weeks after your initial treatment.
Does it hurt?
- No, this treatment does not hurt. Although each individual’s tolerance varies, we find this treatment is very comfortable & quick.
Is laser the only option for reducing dark spots?
- No. We offer different types of lightening treatments for pigmented spots on the face or body. Most popular alternatives include chemical peels, microneedling and at-home skincare products. If you’d like to know more about your options, contact us to set up a FREE consultation.
Can I get this treatment in the summer?
- You can still undergo pigment removal in the summer months if a). The treatment sites ARE NOT exposed to the sun, or b). You are not tanned or are totally avoiding sun exposure in the area(s) being treated. Even the slightest change in skin colour can have a negative affect on your treatment and ultimately, it is not safe to perform. Depending on which areas you are treating, we will make a plan to either continue or take a break during the summer months. This will be up to your technician. For your safety, any lesion on the face CANNOT be treated during the summer months.
Do I have to shave prior to the treatment?
- Although it is not absolutely necessary, a clean-shaven area is best for pigment removal. If there is excessive hair in the area(s), it will be up to the technician’s discretion to shave you.
Please note – this will result in a surcharge added to the cost of your treatment.
Is it safe during pregnancy/breastfeeding?
- We do not treat clients during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Our primary concern is both for your health, and for that of your unborn child. We are happy to treat you after the safe arrival of your baby.
