Vascular Lesions
Spider and Facial veins
There are three main types of vascular lesions that we typically see: spider veins, hemangioma, and cherry angioma. What causes these lesions are abnormal blood vessels that become dense and show right on the skin surface. Vascular lesions are commonly caused by genetics, hormone imbalances or changes, injuries, or exposure to environmental factors. Many people have these as birthmarks even. While mainly unharmful, it can be unsightly. Laser technology now allows us to remove these lesions safely and comfortably.
The GentleMax Pro, from Syneron Candela allows us to treat vascular lesions with ease and comfort.
How It Works:
The GentleMax Pro uses its 1064 nm Nd: YAG laser to target hemoglobin and oxyhemoglobin (the parts of cells which contribute to the lesions). When the laser is used in the targeted area, on the vascular lesion, it goes into the cells and heats them, this creates thermal energy. This thermal energy is able to target the specific cells where the vascular damage is, and destroy the lesion in those tissues.
- Your skin should be completely clean and dry prior to treatment. Remove or omit application of any skin care products on the day of treatment.
- AVOID THE SUN-The area to be treated should not be exposed to sun 4- 6 weeks prior to treatment. If you are in the sun during this time you should defer treatment until a later time.
- Treatment of tanned skin may cause blistering or possible hypo-pigmentation which may last for 3-6 months.
- Avoid using tanning creams, spray tans, or any type of temporary pigmented creams prior to treatment.
- Patients who have a darker skin type (V-VI) may have an increased risk of hypo-pigmentation (white spots) or hyperpigmentation (dark spots). Consult your provider.
- Patients with a history of the following conditions may not be good candidates for laser treatment and should consult their primary care provider when considering treatment:
• Diabetic patients or patients with poor circulation
• Patients who have a history of poor healing
• Patients who take a blood thinner, such as coumadin or aspirin - Patients who are taking high doses of iron may have an increased risk of hyperpigmentation.
- Patients typically tolerate this procedure well.
- Using the topical anesthetic such as EMLA / LMX-.4 may constrict blood vessels and is NOT recommended.
- The heat from the laser pulses may be slightly uncomfortable during and immediately following treatment. Cold gel packs/ice can be applied to reduce discomfort.
- You may also apply ice and elevate you legs to decrease discomfort, especially when large areas are treated.
- Tylenol is recommended for any pain, as needed.
- AVOID THE SUN-completely after treatment to reduce hyperpigmentation. Use a broad spectrum SPF 30 zinc oxide or titanium dioxide with UV A/B sunblock.
- Check with your provider about the possibility of using a daily moisturizer.
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours after treatment. Consult your provider.
- Compression stockings may or may not be recommended by your provider.
- TEST SPOTS: Wait 8 weeks to see if the treatment was effective. Your provider will evaluate treatment response or side effects at the follow up visit.
- FULL TREATMENT: Wait at least 8 weeks before the next treatment as resolution of the vessels continues throughout this entire period. Your provider may have you wait even longer between treatments.
- Your leg veins may appear bruised or darker red following treatment. This discoloration will fade over the next few weeks. Brown discoloration may take several months to fade.
- Consult the office immediately if you experience increased pain, redness, swelling or blistering.
- Your provider may recommend the application of a topical antibiotic ointment if blistering occurs.
- No. The Gentlemax Pro laser technology is only able to treat spider veins + broken facial capillaries. Your doctor can provide you with a referral for any varicose vein concerns.
Results differ based on each individual. Depending on the amount of veins & how long they have been present (among other medical history factors), results can be seen almost immediately! Clients will see the most drastic change the following 8 weeks after treatment, and can decide from that point if more sessions are needed. We always take before pictures for this treatment so we can accurately assess the area(s) after the 8 weeks.
- The number of sessions will depend on your own individual expectations as well as the amount/ severity of the veins. The treatments are sold in single sessions for this reason – each treatment is based off of your own wants + needs. Typically, we see clients tend to only need 2 or 3 sessions for maximum results. - No, this treatment does not hurt. Although each individual’s tolerance varies, we find this treatment is very comfortable & quick.
- You can still undergo vein removal in the summer months if a). The treatment sites ARE NOT exposed to the sun, or b). You are not tanned or are totally avoiding sun exposure in the area(s) being treated. Even the slightest change in skin colour can have a negative affect on your treatment and ultimately, it is not safe to perform. Depending on which areas you are treating, we will make a plan to either continue or take a break during the summer months. This will be up to your technician.
- Although it is not absolutely necessary, a clean-shaven area is best for vein removal. If there is excessive hair in the area(s), it will be up to the technician’s discretion to shave you.
Please note – this will result in a surcharge added to the cost of your treatment.
- We do not treat clients during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Our primary concern is both for your health, and for that of your unborn child. We are happy to treat you after the safe arrival of your baby.
